Lifeways provides a substantially separate educational environment for students whose profile meets the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder or intellectual disability. Students are provided with individualized academic, social pragmatic and behavioral curriculum that allows them to achieve their personal and educational goal.
Lifeways uses two curriculum approaches in order to meet the needs of diverse learners: the Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia® (ACE) and Core Curriculum Standards. ACE, which was founded by the New England Center for Children and is used primarily in individualized instructional environments, is a structured program grounded in the principles of Applied Behavioral Analysis. Lifeways classrooms also include small and whole group instructional methodologies in which students are engaging in Core Curriculum Standards through access skills addressed by direct instructional programming.
The program also uses a life skills curriculum to build student independence in activities of daily living. Skills targeted include those needed daily across home and work environments as well as during leisure activities. These skills are addressed in a variety of settings and include cooking, vocational experiences, personal hygiene and community-based instruction.
